Mt. Kailash is considered the most sacred destination in Tibet; there is a steady flow of Hindus as well as Buddhists to this holy place every year. It is not permitted to climb Mt. Kailash, but one can undertake a 52km total with 38 km trek circumambulation around the mountain.

This is a journey by a chartered helicopter. Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and then to Simikot. At Simikot, make a charter helicopter flight to Hilsa, the place closest to China border and drive to Lake Mansarovar across the open spaces of the Tibetan Plateau. Then take the fascinating trip to Mt. Kailash and make a circumambulation around the base of the mountain.

On the tour of Mt. Kailash visitors can bathe in the sacred Mansarovar Lake, with a periphery 88km, depth of 90m and total area of 320 km2. The itinerary is planned so that visitors reach Mansarovar Lake on the full moon day. Asthapavat and Tirthapuri can be visited if pre-arranged. The total journey is 10days/9 nights and the maximum elevation is 5636m.

A beautiful drive through the dramatic valleys, the rivers and through the grazing lands of yaks and sheep. The landscape is filled with snowcapped peaks rising out of the distant sand dunes. Many Tibetan nomads and traders in their traditional dress inhibit this area. By late afternoon, the drive through the green pastures and massive valleys gives way to the first sighting of Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar from Chhesakhang. Walk through the small village of Sherlung and Thugu Gompa on the banks of the holy lake or drive all the way to the western bank for an overnight stay at Chui Gompa (monastery).

One can visit the lake and enjoy the spectacular views of Mt. Gurula Mandhata 7,728m to the south and Kailash to the north.

If pre-arranged, one can visit Rakshasi Lake, Asthaparbat, Nandi Parbat and Tirthapuri.

Drive to Sershong. First day of walking around Kailash begins at Tarbuche. Along the way, one passes numerous chortens (stupas), Chukku monastery, the burial site of the 84 mahasiddhas and wonderful views of cascading creeks, streaming waterfalls and the mighty west face of Kailash.
